About

This project will ease traffic congestion along U.S. 101 through Reedsport by adding a second northbound travel lane from Longwood Drive to 16th Street. This will require modifications to the ADA curb ramp and pedestrian flashing beacon at 20th Street. New streetlights will be installed along U.S. 101 at 13th Street and 19th Street.

Problem: In 2019, the U.S. 101 lane configuration in this area was changed from four lanes (two northbound, two southbound) to three lanes (one northbound, one southbound, one center turn lane). These changes were made to improve safety for both pedestrians and local motorists. However, high northbound traffic volumes often led to long backups during peak travel days, creating new safety problems along the highway.

Solution: This project will change the lane configuration between Longwood Drive and16th Street to offer four lanes for traffic (two northbound, one southbound, one center turn lane) and two bike lanes, one in each direction. This is expected to improve the flow of traffic during peak travel times while maintaining safety benefits for pedestrians and a center turn lane for local motorists.

Reduced parking: To accommodate the extra northbound travel lane, less space will be available for on-street parking. Parking will be available on the southbound side of the highway between 20th Street and 22nd Street but may be restricted in other areas.

Adjustments: Some sidewalk curb extensions will be redesigned. Traffic signals and loop detectors will be adjusted to align with the new lane layout.

Crosswalk: To ensure pedestrian safety, the U.S. 101 crosswalk at 20th Street will be modified to include an overhead Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB), replacing the shoulder-mounted signs at this location.

Lighting: New streetlights will be added or replaced at 13th Street and 19th Street.
